COMMUNITY RECOGNITION STATEMENT
58TH PARLIAMENT OF NEW SOUTH WALES
ROYAL FAR WEST CENTENARY
14 November 2024
Mr Speaker, I wish to acknowledge the centenary of the Far West Children’s Health Scheme – now known as Royal Far West – based in my electorate of Manly. It is Australia’s only national charity dedicated to improving the health and well-being of the nation’s rural and remote children.
On 6 December 1924, while sitting on Manly beach, Methodist Minister, Stanley Drummond conceived the idea of bringing country children to the beach for respite. Two years later, local Northern Beaches Doctor, George Moncrieff Barron offered his medical services free of charge, after noticing the outback children’s health needs and recognising their limited access to health services.
One hundred years on, the Royal Far West continues its extraordinary service in supporting the developmental, behavioural and mental health care of country children. It is without doubt one of Australia’s most respected and enduring charities.
I recognise Jacqui Emery and her leadership team, the dedicated staff and volunteers, and all those who have been involved with the outstanding work of Royal Far West over the years. I wish the organisation well as it embraces it’s next 100 years of service to the children of rural and remote Australia.
JAMES GRIFFIN MP
MEMBER FOR MANLY
Thank you, James Griffin, for your continued support of Royal Far West.
