A champion for Country Kids: Dugald Saunders recognises Royal Far West in NSW Parliament

Royal Far West was recently honoured in the NSW Parliament by Dugald Saunders, Leader of The Nationals and Member for Dubbo, who delivered a heartfelt speech recognising our 100-year-long commitment to the health and wellbeing of country children.

About Dugald Saunders

Before entering politics, Dugald spent 27 years working in the media, including more than a decade as breakfast radio presenter for ABC Radio in Dubbo, where he became a trusted voice for the people of the Western Plains. His deep roots in the region and passion for rural communities have shaped his career and advocacy. Since being elected as MP for Dubbo in 2019, Dugald has held key roles including Minister for Agriculture and Minister for Western NSW, and he continues to champion the needs of country people as the Shadow Minister for Regional NSW.

Dugald has long been a supporter of Royal Far West, regularly engaging with our programs and events, and advocating for better health outcomes for country children. His ongoing support has been instrumental in raising awareness of the unique challenges faced by families in rural and remote Australia

Parliamentary Recognition of Royal Far West

Last week, Mr Saunders stood in the NSW Parliament to acknowledge the work Royal Far West has done over the past 100 years to support the health and wellbeing of country children. In his speech, he reflected on our 100-year gala dinner in Dubbo, the legacy of our founder Reverend Stanley Drummond and the impact of events like the Ride for Country Kids (LINK) – which has raised over $4.5 million since its inception.

In his speech, Mr Saunders shared stories of innovation, resilience and community – from our early seaside camps and aerial baby clinics to today’s telehealth programs and multidisciplinary care at our Centre for Country Kids in Manly. He highlighted the importance of ensuring that children in rural and remote communities have access to the same quality of care as those in metropolitan areas.

A Shared Commitment to Country Kids

We are deeply honoured by this recognition and grateful to Dugald Saunders’ ongoing advocacy and long-standing support. Thank you, Dugald, for standing with us and for your unwavering commitment to going beyond for country children.
