In the vast landscapes of central New South Wales, seven-year-old Tilly faced significant learning and social challenges, exacerbated by the remote location of her home.
Diagnosed with ADHD, Dyslexia, Dyscalculia, and Autism at Royal Far West’s Centre for Country Kids, Tilly’s story changed from one of isolation to one of hope and progress.
“Imagine a child that doesn’t speak very well when they’re two or three, and this gets missed. They then go to school, still don’t speak very well and struggle to learn... They get in trouble at school, their parents say they’re naughty, teachers say they’re naughty. They then believe they’re naughty, their behaviour gets worse and worse and worse.
This child probably ends up leaving school early, either ends up in jail, unemployed, on a pension, on drugs, maybe at the age of eighteen has their own child and then the cycle starts again.
It sounds so cliché but this is real life for many children.
