Royal Far West (RFW) is dedicated to improving the health and wellbeing of country children. In line with our organisational mission and belief that every child has the right to access quality health, education and developmental services, the strong global evidence about the importance of self-determination for First Nations child and family health; and our current strategic priorities, the Royal Far West Board agreed to support the Uluru Statement from the Heart in 2022.
A key pillar of the Uluru Statement is the need for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to have a say in the matters that affect them through an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice to Parliament and we pledge our support for this.
RFW has a proud history of working with First Nations communities, with a considerable proportion of the children and families we support identifying as Aboriginal and Torres Strait peoples. This has taught us important, powerful, and humble lessons in ensuring communities are heard on key issues and policies that impact their lives.
This is a historic opportunity for all Australians to show they are listening to First Nations communities. We believe giving Indigenous Australians a voice enshrined in the constitution will lead to better policies that make a difference and help shape our nation.
RFW also recognises that staff, partners, supporters and the children and families we work with will have a range of personal views and this must be respected. RFW will ensure staff have opportunities to learn about the issues surrounding the referendum, access to accurate information about the referendum and what a constitutionally enshrined First Nations Voice to Parliament would mean.
RFW has a long and deep history of working in community. We know the best outcomes are achieved as a direct result of really listening to the voices of country kids, their families, and the communities around them. By supporting the Uluru Statement from the Heart, we supported the call for the establishment of a First Nations voice in the Constitution. We believe a successful referendum will lead to a better and brighter future for all Australians.”
