Background:

In 2025, Royal Far West is celebrating 100 years of service. This year’s Ride for Country Kids was our biggest yet—traversing the heartland that helped shape the organisation, with 100 riders including a strong contingent of staff. For Chris, our anniversary sparked a bold idea: to restore and ride a 100-year-old bike in honour of Royal Far West’s legacy.

Finding “Ed”—an antique Edworthy Cycle bike—was a stroke of luck. Restoring him was another story: a test of ingenuity, grit and many late nights. From sourcing custom spokes and rebuilding fragile parts to uncovering Ed’s Sydney rail heritage, the process became deeply personal.

When the start of the Ride for Country Kids arrived, Chris and “Ed” set off through Bourke, Cobar, Nyngan and Narromine—sharing roads, stories and hundreds of kilometres with fellow riders and supporters. While Ed’s single-speed setup pushed Chris to the edge, the experience became more than a fundraiser. It became a heartfelt tribute to history, determination and community.

Crossing the finish line surrounded by colleagues, riders and support crews, Chris held more than handlebars—he carried forward the enduring spirit of Royal Far West and its 100 years of caring for country kids. Well done Chris on completing such a major challenge! You are forever a Royal Far West Legend!
