Supporting Country Kids: Royal Far West’s Ongoing Impact in Bourke

How in-community visits and telehealth are improving school readiness and wellbeing for rural children

Access to quality healthcare and early intervention services can be challenging for families living in rural and remote Australia. In communities like Bourke, where distance and access barriers are a daily reality, initiatives that bring care closer to home can make a life-changing difference.

Royal Far West (RFW) is continuing to bridge this gap through its ongoing partnership with Bourke and District Children’s Service (BDCS), delivering vital allied health services to support children’s development and readiness for school.

A hands-on approach to care

In May 2026, the Royal Far West team returned to Bourke for another in-community visit as part of this important program. The multidisciplinary team – including a Speech Pathologist, Occupational Therapist, and Head of Schools & Early Years – worked closely with children, families, and educators across the community.

During the visit, clinicians screened and observed new children, while also reconnecting face-to-face with existing telehealth clients. These in-person moments are invaluable, strengthening relationships and ensuring continuity of care.

Building skills that last

Beyond individual assessments, the visit also focused on empowering educators. Workshops were delivered to build understanding of emotional regulation, alongside real-time modelling of strategies in the classroom.

This collaborative approach ensures that support for children continues long after the clinicians leave – embedding practical skills within the local learning environment.

Strengthening community connections

The team also had the opportunity to take part in the local Reconciliation Walk – an important moment to connect with families and the broader Bourke community. These experiences help deepen trust and reinforce culturally respectful engagement.

A blended model that works

This program is delivered through a mix of regular in-community visits and ongoing telehealth services between visits. Since commencing in April 2025, the Bourke program has grown into a consistent, reliable source of support for local families.

By combining face-to-face care with telehealth, Royal Far West ensures children can access the support they need – no matter where they live.

Driving better outcomes for country kids

Early intervention plays a critical role in helping children build the skills they need to thrive at school and beyond. Through this partnership, children in Bourke are gaining access to services that may otherwise be out of reach.

Royal Far West extends its thanks to Minderoo Foundation for its continued support, helping to drive meaningful change and brighter futures for country children.
