The Thriving Kids initiative is a national effort to improve developmental outcomes for children across Australia, with a particular focus on those living in rural and remote communities. It aims to address systemic barriers and equity gaps and is scheduled to begin rolling out on 1 July 2026. Full implementation is expected by July 2027.
Our submission highlights the urgent need to close the developmental gap between children in urban and rural communities. Drawing on our experience, we outlined the systemic barriers country kids face – from workforce shortages and fragmented care to limited access to early intervention and culturally safe services.
We also shared evidence from our programs, including the Healthy Kids Bus Stop and our Schools and Early Years service, which have delivered measurable improvements in child development, educator capacity and family wellbeing. These models demonstrate what’s possible when services are community-led, trauma-informed and tailored to local needs.
Our key recommendations to the Committee include:
- Prioritising early developmental screening and support
- Investing in rural workforce development
- Aligning health, education and child protection systems
- Supporting flexible, scalable funding models
- Embedding cultural responsiveness across all services
This submission is part of our ongoing advocacy for country kids and their families. We’re committed to ensuring that rural children are not left behind – and that their voices are heard in national policy conversations.
