Supporting Bourke Children Through Allied Health

Multidisciplinary screenings, family education, and local partnerships helping country children thrive with support from Minderoo Foundation.

Royal Far West recently returned to Bourke for its third in-community visit of 2026, continuing its commitment to supporting children and families across regional New South Wales through multidisciplinary allied health services. Working in partnership with Bourke and District Children’s Services (BDCS) and with the ongoing support of Minderoo Foundation, the visit provided valuable opportunities for children, families and educators to access specialist support close to home.

During the week of 17 to 21 August 2026, Royal Far West’s team of specialists, including psychologist Samantha Packer, speech pathologist Rose Strazzeri and occupational therapist Caitlyn Harrold, worked directly with local children, families and educators across the community.

The visit included a range of early intervention and developmental support activities, including screenings and observations, a cognitive assessment, a parent information session focused on developmental milestones and referral indicators, and a Lunch and Learn workshop with staff. These activities help identify children’s strengths and areas where additional support may be beneficial, ensuring families and educators can access the right pathways to care and support at the right time.

A special highlight of the visit was the opportunity for the team to meet and yarn with local Elder Uncle Phil. Through conversations about language, culture and community, the team gained valuable insights into the rich heritage of the Bourke region. The visit also included a walk through the Standing Stories outdoor sculpture exhibition, where each sculpture represents a story or perspective from a local Aboriginal person or family, offering a meaningful connection to community history and culture.

Royal Far West has been partnering with Bourke and District Children’s Services since April 2025 to provide multidisciplinary screenings and allied health services with a strong focus on supporting children as they transition to primary school. The program includes four in-community visits each year, complemented by telehealth support between visits, helping ensure consistent access to care regardless of distance. The partnership is funded through to March 2028.

By working alongside local families, educators and community organisations, Royal Far West continues to help create stronger outcomes for country children. These visits not only provide access to specialist services but also foster the relationships, trust and collaboration that are essential for long-term community impact.

Royal Far West extends its sincere thanks to Minderoo Foundation for its ongoing support, helping ensure children in the Bourke community can access the services they need to reach their full potential.
