We’re delighted to launch the 2020 My Life Story project, an initiative of Royal Far West and educational writing platform Littlescribe, which starts in March.
My Life Story supports city and country primary school children to write and illustrate their own book. The program aims to promote a positive self-image for all children, give them a voice, and cultivate understanding between students living in regional and remote NSW with those living in Sydney.
Now, more than ever, kids need an opportunity to share their feelings and experiences. Evidence shows that natural disasters create trauma in children, greatly impacting on their ability to learn and engage at school. My Life Story will give these children a platform through which to share and heal.
Public, private and independent schools in Sydney are getting behind the program to support their country peers from drought affected areas and fire devasted communities. Students in country schools are being gifted the program, which sends a lovely message that city people care for them, and it also gives city residents a ‘feel good’ connection with country kids who are doing it tough.
My Life Story combines the development of literacy skills while connecting school communities far and wide, using digital technology, a step-by-step guide and plenty of support for teachers and students.
A fabulous component of the program will be when students take part in an instructional live webinar, beamed into their schools, where they can ask writing and drawing questions to children’s author Andrew Daddo and illustrator James Foley, both of whom are involved in the program.
We will be keenly following the students’ creative writing journeys throughout Terms 1 and 2, and can’t wait for the excitement and fanfare in Term 3 as students receive their hard copy books, celebrate being first time authors, and get to share their amazing ‘My Life Story’ with their city and country cousins.
