Services

The Royal Far West Children’s Health Scheme and Services for the Aged is committed to creating Healthy Country Children.

Each year more than 3000 children from about 330 country locations travel to the Scheme’s Manly complex to access specialist medical and allied health care that is not available in their local communities.

These services at Royal Far West are set to expand significantly in 2007/08 with a $1 million funding boost announced in October, 2007.

The funding will go to providing important new services in areas such as mental and oral health, healthy eating and Indigenous literacy.

A range of specialist health services have been available at our facility in Manly for many years. They include paediatric medical, child and adolescent mental health, ophthalmology, allied health and orthodontics.
Our allied health services include Clinical Psychology, Dietetics, Occupational Therapy, Orthoptics, Physiotherapy, Social Work and Speech Pathology.

Some of our services are also provided on an outreach basis in rural locations.

An outreach program, operated in partnership with North Coast Area Health Service, is based in Casino, in northern NSW.
Children and adolescents are assessed and treated for of a range of conditions including:

  • ADHD
  • Autism Spectrum Disorders / Asperger's Syndrome
  • developmental disabilities
  • behaviour problems; and
  • mental health disorders including depression, anxiety and conduct disorders.

Some of the more common presenting problems include:

  • adolescents and children with delayed development
  • families with children displaying disruptive oppositional behaviour
  • adolescents and children experiencing failure and disinterest in school work
  • children with communication and speech problems
  • anxiety and depression disorders associated with problems at home and at school
  • children with poor co-ordination and / or perceptual difficulties
  • families unable to cope with their child’s emotional and / or behavioural deterioration
  • children and parents with relationship / attachment difficulties; and
  • families requiring intervention for entrenched conflict.

Access to health services provided by other organisations such as the specialist children's hospitals, Dalwood Assessment Centre and the Spastic Centre, is facilitated through our accommodation and transport services.

In keeping with Stanley Drummond's original vision, we conduct a respite program for special needs children from country NSW, and their families, which enables them to have a supported "holiday by the sea".

Who Can Use Our Services

Royal Far West's services are provided for children from country NSW who cannot otherwise access these services. To be eligible to access our services you must:
  • be younger than 16 years old,
  • live in country NSW ( north of Taree, south of Nowra, west of the Great Divide),
  • not be able to access the services in your local area, and
  • fulfil any relevant clinical criteria

How to Access Our Services

All children require a referral from their treating doctor. We also require other relevant information which is collected through a series of questionnaires which are to be completed by the parents / guardian and the child’s school.

Children wishing to access our orthodontics service require a referral from their local dentist or dental therapist. They must be assessed as meeting the clinical criteria for entry to the orthodontics service. Further information on our Orthodontics Service can be obtained on 02 89668562.

Children accessing our services at Manly are accommodated onsite. All children must be accompanied by a parent / guardian. It is often beneficial to have both parents attend and we also have the capacity to accommodate siblings.
There is no charge for patients but there is an accommodation charge, which includes meals, for parents and siblings. This can be discussed in detail with our Appointments team.

Families travel to Manly by both private and public transport. We have limited parking facilities for families who drive. Those who travel by bus or train can get to Manly by ferry, or, in some cases we are able to organise a volunteer to provide transport. This should also be discussed in detail with our Appointments team.
