Sulkies rest up after drive through Liverpool Plains

26-Sep-2011

Sulkies, horses and drivers are resting up after their 250km journey across the Liverpool Plains from Quirindi to Willow Tree - which raised close to $10,000 for Royal Far West.

The drive is organised by the Liverpool Range Harness Club to support the work of Royal Far West – a charity which helps NSW country kids access specialist healthcare. The drive started at Quirindi Heritage Village on Sunday, September 18, 2011 and finished at Willow Tree on Saturday September 24, 2011.

Royal Far West interim CEO Lindsay Cane said the drive had been a major success this year and would make a significant impact on the care Royal Far West could offer country kids.

“Kids come to Royal Far West seeking specialist healthcare and help they can’t get near their homes. This sulky drive is a gutsy effort from a wonderful band of drivers and supporters who really support the children from their areas,” Ms Cane said.

“It’s exciting to see such strong endorsement for the work of Royal Far West coming from a number of regions in country NSW. The generosity of local people and communities has been inspiring.”

Liverpool Range Harness Club President Bill Greer and his wife Trish are the driving force behind the event.

“It’s our second year on the drive and we’ve had a strong growth not only in participants but also in the dollars raised,” Mr Greer said.

“This year we had drivers from places like Dunedoo, Walcha, Parkes and Goulburn and I hope the drivers and the towns they come from continue to increase in future years.

“When you get out in country NSW it’s amazing how many people have been helped by Royal Far West. I think it’s really important that those who can support the cause get behind Royal Far West and all the country kids they serve and support,” he said.

The next sulky drive is booked for September 15, 2012. People keen to get involved next year can get in early and contact Bill Greer on 6747 1773.
